Tom Wood
Aston Martin Owners Club

Al is a personal friend of mine and an RAF colleague but I had never heard his amazing account of his unsupported attempt on the South Pole. 88 members of the Aston Martin Owners Club, from across the World, listened to Al’s captivating presentation delivered on Zoom and to say we were all mesmerised is an understatement…. from the word go he transported us to the South Pole, an unforgiving environment fraught with danger, but it is his heartfelt delivery that really makes you aware of the hardships endured and the determination he and his small team needed. His open and honest account of his journey, including the trials and tribulations on his return to the UK is inspirational and I was left with the view that I really can do anything I put my mind to, irrespective of the challenges I might face. I am honoured to call Al a friend and humbled by his achievements. Thumbs Up Mate.

These are a few quotes from our members:

Al Sylvester an amazing chap and so inspirational - Chris Morrell

Al was absolutely fascinating, gosh what a man - Maria Glenn

The man certainly has an addiction to adventure and challenge, which makes for some great stories to tell - Rob Parry

One top tip - if Al ever asks you to help him with a spot of DIY, make sure it is not a ruse to get you to accompany him on a expedition to the Himalayas!

Thanks again Al for doing this for me - you are a true star.

"a truly inspirational man"

I worked extensively with Al when I was appointed Director of the Royal Air Force's Junior Officers' Development Programme. When working in day-to-day Academy business, Al was the consummate professional. However, it was in his role of supporting our leadership programme where he also excelled. As part of the leadership programme the Students would prepare a series of debates, one of them discussing the relative strengths and weaknesses of Captain Scott. Al, as a man who has tackled the Antarctic himself, would play a significant part in the discussions, as he could not only bring to bear the reality of operating in such an unforgiving environment, but also his extensive experiences in the Armed Forces and particularly in the crucial RAF Mountain Rescue Service. As such, this charismatic man, a true leader and adept manager, with countless examples of real-time, hard-earned and always relevant experiences. A truly inspirational man.

"A fascinating speaker whose experiences relate to everyone’s challenges"

We were asked to provide inspirational speakers for the Saracens Academy as part of their Players Development Programme. Al delivered a thought provoking and highly motivating presentation describing his South Pole expedition. The audience, young professional rugby players, were used to being briefed on ‘success stories’ and so learning from reflective glory. What was truly inspirational with Al was that his story was not necessarily one of success but about how one deals with the unexpected, the inability to reach the Goal and how to deal with disappointment, and to use that as a way of being stronger, more focused and ultimately successful at subsequent challenges. He described scenarios that were almost indescribable and how strength of character and positive thinking took him and his team forward. He does not define himself as ‘super human’ nor anything more than those he speaks to; he merely sets the scene and shows how positive thinking backed up with sound preparation and a degree of skill and effective training will build a resilience individual. A standout observation from a 19 year old player - “I often feel that I am at rock bottom and cannot go on if the score line is against us; Al’s experiences show that when we feel like we are failing or cant go on during a match or training or even when injured, there is still much more within each of us to ensure that we keep going, and of course succeed.” A fascinating speaker whose experiences relate to everyone’s challenges, be they at the South Pole or just in the High Street!
